Munich get the job done in Minsk, qualify for next round

  • Trevor Parkes scored his 6th goal of the tournament
  • Danny aus den Birken earned his shutout after facing 22 shots
  • Munich qualify for Round of 16

The only goal of the first period found its way into the back of the net courtesy of a slapshot by none other than Trevor Parkes. Taking his tally to six, the Munich forward made sure that his name, which is comfortably situated on the Top Scorer pedestal, won’t be returning to his jersey any time soon.

Aside from saving the many shots that came their way in the second, both netminder’s became involved in an unorthodox way when they received a two-minute penalty each. Originally given as an interference call for the forward, Minsk netminder Igor Brikun ended up being penalised for diving whereas the verdict for aus den Birken was delay of game after he unnecessarily froze the puck. Neither side could capitalise from these as the second period ended goalless.

Maximilian Kastner removed any doubt of his team’s ability to finish off this fixture when he held his composure to beat his man and outwait Brikun before tucking it home to make it 2-0. A powerplay goal with five minutes left to play made for somewhat of a flattering scoreline for the Germans, displayed by a slam of the helmet onto the ice by Brikun, whose side were in the game until this point.
