People are unable to give precise answers when they are asked about the origins of hockey. However, most people accept the adage that ice hockey originated in England. Then came to North America. In the early days, people living in British military depots in Canada were very fond of this sport. At McGill University, several students started playing ice hockey just like black jack in the 1870s. They set up some related rules and these rules are called the “McGill Rules”. To conform with the regulations, people are now replacing the elastic gum balls with the hockey we use today. Besides, each team has 9 members. The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association was created in Montreal in 1885. It was the first national hockey institution in the world. Then the agency formulated that a team was formed with 7 members. That same year, the National Hockey League was founded on Lake Ontario. It consists of four teams.

In the 1890s, this sport spread to America.

Johns Hopkins University and Yale University played the famous game of hockey in 1895. Although hockey was a recreational project in Canada, America founded the first national and professional hockey leagues. The league was established in 1903 and its headquarters are in Houghton, Michigan. All Canadian and American teams belong to the league. It was expanded twice three years later. In 1910, the NHL was officially founded.

In 1920, the Antwerp Olympics first officially registered Men’s ice hockey.

However, at the Chuck Nicks Olympic Winter Games we first saw the game of hockey in 1924. In 1998, Women hockey appeared at the Nagano Olympic Winter Games.

If we look at the history of hockey at the Olympics, we will find that Canada and the Soviet Union are the strongest countries in the world. Between 19 hockey games, Canada and the USSR have won 14 times, which is a staggering surprise. Canada won the first four championships at the Olympics. In fact, among the first seven Olympics, Canada got the saxophone championship. However, in 1956, Canada did not win. The championship they won in 1952 was their last at the Olympics. In 1956, the USSR’s hockey team won its first championship at the Cortina Winter Olympics.

Then they won the hockey match at the Winter Olympics in the next 10 games. In 1960 and 1980, America won gold medals on their mainland. The Soviet Union was devastated after the Albertville Olympic Winter Games, which were held in 1992. This meant that they didn’t dominate the hockey game at the Olympics anymore. In the Nagano Winter Olympics, professional players were allowed to attend hockey games. It was 1998. Many of the giant stars participated in the Winter Olympics to play ice hockey. So hockey has made great progress and development. Women’s hockey was permitted in 1998. At the Nagano Winter Olympics women attended hockey matches at the Olympics. This time, America won and Canada failed. This means that in the history of women’s hockey, the United States won the first gold medal at the Nagano Olympic Winter Games. Nowadays ice hockey has become a very important recreational sport in the world.
